SUMMARY:Webinar: What’s the Matter: Clean Air Festival
DESCRIPTION:What’s the Matter: Clean Air Festival\nMarina Walker\nFounder
 \, What’s the Matter CIC\nWhat’s the Matter — Air Pollution Events &
amp\; Awareness\, London\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe all breathe air. But not all ai
r is equal.\n\nAir pollution isn’t just an environmental issue. It shape
s health\, childhood\, and life expectancy. And it falls hardest on those
who had no say in where they live. Why has clean air become a luxury?\nWha
t’s the Matter is a new environmental health festival that explores how
art\, healthcare\, research and community engagement can work together to
improve public understanding of air pollution and inspire action.\n\n\nIn
this webinar we hear from Marina Walker the Founder of What’s the Matte
r a Community Interest Company about the festival that creates opportuniti
es for people to experience\, discuss and respond to environmental health
in ways that are creative\, participatory and rooted in everyday life. The
  first edition brought together NHS hospitals\, schools\, universities\, l
ocal authorities\, researchers\, artists and community organisations acros
s London.\n\nActivities included exhibitions in hospital settings\, clinic
ian workshops\, community art installations\, citizen science\, schools pr
ogrammes and public discussions\, all designed to translate complex resear
ch into accessible experiences. Throughout the festival\, we explored how
creative engagement can complement scientific evidence—helping people co
nnect with data emotionally as well as intellectually\, and building agenc
y rather than anxiety.\n\nWe work with artists who know what it’s like t
o breathe polluted air. They make things that catch people’s eyes and ma
ke them feel something\, opening up space for curiosity and conversation.\
nOur ambition is to develop What’s the Matter into a platform for envi
ronmental health engagement\, supporting researchers\, healthcare organisa
tions and public bodies to communicate evidence in ways that foster unders
tanding\, collaboration and meaningful behaviour change.\nAir pollution re
mains one of the greatest environmental threats to human health\, yet publ
ic understanding of its causes\, impacts and solutions remains far too lim
ited. We need a national air quality awareness campaign that empowers peop
le with the knowledge\, tools and confidence to reduce their exposure and
advocate for cleaner environments. What’s the Matter is an exciting exam
ple of how art\, healthcare\, science and communities can come together to
make the invisible visible and inspire meaningful action.\n\nProfessor Si

 nopharmacology\, University of Southampton\n  \n\n
