Net Zero and Health Hubs
Healthy Low-carbon Transport Hub
Rapid decarbonisation of transport is essential if the UK is to meet statutory greenhouse gas (CO2e) emissions targets. Historically, CO2e emissions reduction measures have not systemically considered physical and mental health impacts, or inequalities in their distribution. The Healthy Low-carbon Transport Hub (HLTHub) will identify barriers, incentives and accelerants for implementing healthy low-carbon transport schemes.
Child and adolescent Health Impacts of Learning Indoor environments under net zero
To meet net zero targets, the UK needs to make buildings more energy efficient, while acknowledging that respiratory infections also spread more easily in airtight buildings. Our goal is to make sure that as schools and nurseries become more environmentally friendly (to help reach “net zero”), they still support children’s learning, health, and wellbeing.
Indoor HABItability during the Transition to net zero housing hub
The INHABIT Hub aims to produce scientific evidence and policy-relevant solutions to realise the health co-benefits of the UK’s net zero transition in housing. Utilising systems thinking, real-world monitoring, integrated modelling, and showcasing Net Zero projects, the INHABIT approach will inform policy development and implementation, enhancing the physical and mental health of the UK population.
Transdisciplinary Health Research to Identify Viable Interventions for Net Zero Goals: food futures
The THRIVING Food Futures research hub will find policy solutions that reduce the carbon footprint of our diets whilst maximising health co-benefits. The research hub is a meeting space for the public, policymakers and academics to co-design and evaluate policies for healthy, sustainable diets.
National hub on net zero, health and extreme heat
HEARTH aims to assess and realise the co-benefits of the net zero transition and the reduction in health risks associated with extreme heat for vulnerable communities for whom evidence is lacking. This will be achieved through co-production of novel evidence-based knowledge, evaluation frameworks and tools, and provision of actionable, high-impact solutions.
UKRI Sustainable Health Systems Hub
The Sustainable Health Systems Hub (SHS–Hub) is tasked with helping the NHS to decarbonise patient pathways and become environmentally sustainable. The Hub is developing a deployable holistic toolkit which can be used to create and implement emission reduction plans across a range of clinical, health, and social care patient pathways.
Green Healthcare Hub
The BSMS Green Healthcare Hub is a leading group in research, policy and education relating to environmental, social and financial elements of sustainability in health and healthcare. The vision Green Healthcare Hub (GHH) is to be a world-leading international hub to support the NHS and serve as a model to other health systems in decarbonising the commissioning and delivery of healthcare.
